  • Cathedral Ranges Traverse - 2 Days

"Great service – professional and courteous, food was amazing! I was pleasantly surprised by the quantity and quality of all of the meals – I have a pretty high standard and this certainly met my requirements! Wow – I personally loved the ridge trek"
- Kate, Melbourne - Certified Weekend Warrior.

Less than 2 hours from Melbourne, the Cathedral Ranges are an amazing destination for a weekend adventure. Adventurous trails, great campsites, stuning views and the opportunity to try out an abseil! It is one of the best venues for adventure close to melbourne!

While this weekend adventure is open to people of all (or no) experience, you will need an average or above level of fitness, as well as be comfortable on very uneven ground. There are prolonged sections of the ridge that involve lots of scrambling and climbing up over rock sections and in some areas we are also exposed to heights. So a good mind for heights, or an attitude to be challenged are required!

Highlights:

  • Overnight hike
  • Traverse the jagged Ridge from North to South
  • Opportunity to try abseiling
  • Hassle free with equipment and food supplied

Itinerary:

Day 1: Morning briefing, hike up to Cathedral Peak, then to our established campsite. Tented camp.

Day 2: Continue the traverse, abseil from Sugarloaf Peak, descend Wells Cave, desend to Sugarloaf Saddle, then return to start and depart!

Day 1 - Arrival and hike!

We'll meet as planned at 8:30am at the Cooks Mill campgrounds where we'll have a breifing for the weekend including a check of gear to make sure we're all prepared. Once we're all checked off we'll have a last minute water fill and toilet stop before departing. We'll hike on the flat valley for less than an hour, before we turn and begin our climb to the northern end of the range. It could take us 1.5-2 hours of a steady climb to reach the ridgeline, and then a little more if we decide to take the side trip to The Cathedral. We'll have lunch somewhere with a stunning view, then begin our traverse along the jagged ridge to camp in the saddle called the 'Farmyard'. We'll arrive at the farmyard to our camp set up for us, the kettle boiled and snacks on the table! Then relax until dinner is cooked for us!

Day 2 - Traverse, abseil and home!

This action packed day starts early with a hearty breakfast, we leave camp and continue the traverse. Today involes a lot of scrambling and uneven terrain, while we wont be covering great distances we'll be moving slowly and concentrating hard! We should reach Sugarloaf peak in around 2 hours, where we'll rest as the abseil is being established. We'll abseil straight off the summit around 25 meteres down to a track below, then descened through Well's cave all the way to Sugarloaf saddle, where we'll enjoy a great lunch in the picnic shelter. After lunch we'll walk the last 4.5kms on a well formed trail down the valley to our starting point where we'll farewell and depart around 3-4pm.
